Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: An Advanced Training Course from an Object Relations Perspective A One Year Intensive Study The One Year Certificate Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy consists of two interrelated components: 1. Six clinically oriented seminars; 2. Small Group Supervision. This clinically oriented course will provide an opportunity to develop and deepen the psychoanalytic knowledge and the clinical therapeutic skills of intensive psychotherapy, with special emphasis on the contributions of British Object Relations theory. Qualified licensed clinicians from the various fields of mental health are invited to apply. Upon finishing the course, PCC will award a Certificate of Completion. Objectives The course endeavors to provide an immersion in the psychotherapeutic techniques derived from the British and American Object Relations Models. This approach builds upon the work of Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Bion, and Tustin, and has been a central theoretical and clinical component of all training programs at PCC. The teaching of theoretical concepts will be closely correlated with clinical application in all of the seminars. Structure The training course consists of two integrated components. The first component is made up of six seminar courses. These are conducted over three trimesters of two seminars each. The course begins in September and ends in June. The seminar courses will focus on the essential and unfolding elements of the psychotherapeutic encounter. The second component is a series of small group case seminars beginning in the fall and ending in the spring. Students are encouraged to present cases from their clinical experience for discussion with their colleagues and the Faculty Instructor. Small Group Case-Based Seminars There will be five small group case seminars per trimester. Each group, consisting of 3-4 students, will meet on a different night of the week to accommodate student schedules. The Faculty Instructors will change each trimester in order to introduce the students to a variety of experienced analysts. Some students may wish to receive elective individual supervision. This can be arranged through the Faculty Mentors and fees can be agreed upon in accordance with what is affordable. Though it is not required, we strongly recommend concurrent individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy to the students. The Faculty Mentors will be available to those students wishing consultation on choosing a therapist. Courses The courses develop, in stepwise manner, the essential components of an object relations perspective of the psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic encounter. All of the courses will integrate the clinical and theoretical aspects of the subject matter, using clinical examples from the instructors and students. The fall courses focus on the first encounters with the patient and listening to and formulating the unconscious communication of phantasy and projective identification. The two winter courses follow the progression of therapy as reflected in the emerging transference and countertransference configurations. There is a special emphasis on communication of this in dreams. During the final spring courses, there will be a focus on the deepening of the therapeutic experience as more elemental, primitive and infantile aspects of the patient's personality emerge in the dyad. Readings will be offered for each of the courses and will be distributed before the beginning of each trimester. Fall Courses 10 sessions
